Summary:
- Radiopaedia case ID: 84511
- Image ID: 53953611
- Study findings: Ground glass stoppers. Ground glass is a type of glass, whereby the surface has been roughened by grinding it. Microscopically the surface of the glass now consists of innumerable tiny fragments of glass. Ground glass has a number of industrial applications including to improve the fit of glass stoppers when they are inserted into the mouths of laboratory glassware containers. Ground glass is also used in sheet form in photography to create special optical effects. It is clear where the idea for using ground glass opacity as a descriptor for a specific form of lung opacity came from.
