Biopsies from all 168 cases demonstrated the characteristic features of active inflammatory demyelinating disease consisting of hypercellular lesions with myelin loss (A; Luxol-fast blue and periodic acid Schiff), reactive gliosis (B; haematoxylin–eosin), Creutzfeldt cells (C; haematoxylin–eosin), lipid-laden macrophages (D and E; immunocytochemistry for proteolipid protein) and relative axonal preservation (F; Bielschowsky silver impregnation). |
