  • Description: A community health worker (CHW) with the Tingathe program, Chimwemwe—“Joy,” in the local Chichewa language—meets with an HIV-positive pregnant woman at her home in Lilongwe, Malawi. Through close coordination with the Malawi Ministry of Health, Tingathe CHWs improve linkages between programs and providers focused on preventing mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV.Home-based support is an integral part of the Tingathe program. Every HIV-positive pregnant and breastfeeding woman brought into care is invited to have a CHW as case manager. Chimwemwe and her colleagues provide HIV testing and counseling to family members in the patient’s home and also within the community. In addition, they ensure newly identified patients are linked to HIV care. Furthermore, during monthly home visits, CHWs provide information on medication side effects, importance of adherence, support with disclosure, and counseling on infant feeding.
