Summary:

Description
  • Description: Students at the C. B. Harris Memorial Elementary school garden located in Careysburg outside of Monrovia, Liberia, have nearly doubled their school garden to 0.25 ha of vegetable beds. The students learn agriculture alongside instructors as well as some of their mothers as part of the USAID FED Back to School gardening program.

Ten years after the end of Liberia’s civil wars, the majority of Liberians continue to live in poverty and most remain dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods and grow their own food for survival. In 2014, USAID FED identified and selected a total of 100 schools to participate in the Back to School Garden Program. After proving that growing food has a place in schools in 2013, USAID FED is targeting a total of 4,500 students.
