Background

IT WP already supports the limited use of NC and ND licensed images.[1][2] Their Wikipedia:File non liberi policy.

AF WP has consensus to allow NC and ND licensed images from NC Commons.[3]

1. EDP template on Meta by WMF legal

• Pending update of the EDP in AF.[4]

1. Either go through the new project process. Prior discussion on meta since 2014 has 54 for:15 against moving forwards.[5]
2. Create a bot bring over NC and ND images people wish to use.[6]

Clarification of "ND"

The section ND on the Main Page contains the sentence "So changing the resolution of an image is permitted. As are insufficient changes such as trimming non contributory white space around the edge of an image."

I think that we need to be careful with both parts of that statement. Within the spirit of ND, I believe that changing the resolution to match the resolution of the output device is in order (Wikipedia does this all the time, otherwise the files that are downloaded would be huge). However, any other change of resolution could be seen as making a derivative of the original. We should also be careful about trimming "non-contributory white space ...". Part of the conditions of the images that I will be uploading is that the space surrounding the image must be retained. I will be making that section transparent, but having four dots at the corner to ensure that the image is properly displayed. Martinvl (talk) 17:35, 29 March 2024 (UTC)

Removing a logo or a attribution signature would not be permitted. But simply removing excess white space would not rise to the level of generating a derivative in most cases, but of course there would be exceptions. @User:Doc James. Hi, I am proposing adding white space to the native image, not removing it. The logos that are supplied in this instance do not have white space around them, but the rules for use specify that the user must allow white space around the logo. Clarrification of scope of NC Commons

I propose that the introductory sentence to NC Commons be modified as shown below:

Welcome to NC Commons a project by Wiki Project Med which has collected is a repository for 8,671,596 NC or ND licensed media files available for non-commercial use or use as is. use in accordance with the relevant Creative Commons licence associated with each item of media.

Use in other Wikimedia Projects

I propose that a new section be added to the front page with the above heading. The text would read

Media from NC Commons may be used in Wikimedia projects subject to approval by that project. At the current time media that is used in other projects is copied from NC Commons to that project using a template within that project. It is hoped that at some time in the future, Wikimedia editors will be able to link to NC Commons in much the same way as they link to Wikimedia Commons. The following projects are happy that media from NC Commons be copied into their projects:

• Afrikaans Wikipedia.
